Phoenix Nights

Some people are so predictable.
Joaquin gives a heart felt speech and an incel sea of bitterness fills social media.

I can understand it, there are a lot of fakes out there.. People who ride the wave of “identity politics” and glamour chase worthy causes merely for PR.
Fickle, dumb empty people.. Like Anal Hathaway.. A wonen who claimed to be veggie but kept getting caught eating burgers
.. Or Sam Smith a guy who says hes “gender fluid” but then admits to not even knowing what the tern means
Or the many stars who make ethical speeches only to go and act unethically, cheating on wives, blah blah blah . Claiming to be healthy and then snorting whatever comes their way etc etc

In Joaquins case none of this applies hes been fighting the good fight for years.
Personally I always liked him, I could see he carries alot of trauma… Theres a sadness of truth about him..
Daniel Day Lewis has it as well..

I see he’s been accused of being, “Woke” (in the derogatory sense of the word) .. I don’t think the people who use that term know what it means.
“Woke” is a term that was meant to mean enlightened.. Able to see the game-so, in that sense he is . But then quickly became a cynical political philosophy, where spit, ego, attention seeking and blatant fascism slide in the hashtag slipstream of ethical causes- this is what the professionally cynical and the permanently snide are saying he is but this is what he isn’t.

Joaquin is not part of that, he has the attention he could use it for many things.. He uses it to fight bullying, which is what racism, homophobia and animal abuse is.
He (and his family) have been doing it for decades.
Also, He actually took aim at the broken woke, when he talked about being against cancel culture.
Cancel culture is one of “Wokes” main disciplines, if not malicious aim

You know he could of went further when he attacked dairy.
Once the cow is the victim of artificial insemination, not only is the new born calf snatched from the, visibly upset, mother and the milk that is meant for the calf stolen by humans but humans then kill the calf, the mother is often near by and can hear the screams. Once the dairy cow reaches a certain age and stops producing milk, they kill her too.
To know this and to still partake in that process takes either serious heartless selfishness or nuclear grade cognitive dissonance

Dennis Hooper- The Photographer Side

dennis_hopper1.jpg

Denis Hooper is mainly known as an actor, starring in critically acclaimed films like Rebel Without A Course, Blue Velvet, Easy Rider and Apocolypse Now- he also made a slew of awful ” straight to video” films but let’s be kind and forget about them.

However, Mr Hooper was also a very good photographer who had a knack for capturing moments that summed up the 60s. His pictures told stories, they were photojournalism mixed with the poetry of French new wave cinema.
Hooper was an adventurer and wanted to be in the middle of whatever storm was around. He once said ” “When I was a teenager and moved to California, I realized there were a lot of artists and actors I thought were great–everybody from Van Gogh to W. C. Fields–who basically had the idea that you can’t make discoveries if you sit around waiting for something to happen. You’ve got to get out of there”

Before Easy Rider delivered stardom, Hooper spent much of the 1960s obsessively taking pictures of the counter culter and famous figures of the time. He followed protesters during the civil rights movement, hung out in cafes, walked the streets and took pictures of fellow artists. Regarding artists he claimed ‘The only people that I really found comfortable being photographed were artists. They asked me to photograph them. They wanted to be photographed. And that was cool.’

His street pictures of Los Angeles, are somewhat reminiscent of the work of Lee Friedlander. Hooper said ” LA was Pop…LA was the billboards. LA was the automobile culture. LA was the movie stars and LA was the whole idea of what pop was about – commercial art’

There are a few published collections, of Mr Hoopers work out there, My favourite is Dennis Hopper: Photographs 1961-1967

The Witchfinder General

The internet, when first ushered in, it was done so with a mix of hope, hype and fanfare. It was promised the internet would redesign culture (it has), it would be a portal to lots of free information ( it is ) and it would give voice to people no matter what they believed, an egalitarian paradise (it sort of was) .
Alas, as the wild west of cyberspace was taken over by big business, the usual gatekeepers, guarded the usual gates. Algorithms were set that created thought ghettos, where one can only see their own world reflected back at them.
This has created an odd form of brainwashing and a culture where it’s, almost, impossible, to have a reasoned debate, not just on the internet but also in “real life”… Worse than this it has made people hysterical in their intolerance of opposing views.
Nowhere is the hysteria more hysterical than when the cyber crowds think they have discovered a lack in a individuals “virtue” . They then use the supposed lack of virtue as a reason to claim the most fanciful things and outright decimate a person’s life.
In fact, in many ways, the current hounding of anyone who hasn’t managed to lead a moral life on a par with Buddha, is a modern form of witchhunt.
One of the biggest trigger issues for the ” identity politics” brigade is race or to be more exact perceived racism.

For me, I don’t judge by colour – I wasn’t bought up in an all-white English town in 1923 and I wasn’t bought up in Sussex, which is a hilariously white (middle class) place even in 2019.
I also see “right” and ” left ” as pretty useless terms that reek of lies and should have been left in the last century.
The council estates of Oxford (where I was born and bruised) were a mixed affair ( The poor from England, Ireland and Jamacia ..) All raised to be flesh and fodder for the local car factories- unless you wanted to be a hairdresser or in the building trade or a hairdresser in the building trade.
I mentioned this, as such a background fostered an understanding that came from experience and books, which is pretty much a universe away from the modern world where people seem to get most of their views and experience from the click of a mouse and cushioned “safe spaces”.

One of the odd things I have seen on the internet, as well as in the press which to keep up with demand has lowered its standards, is that things that used to be considered centrist politics or right of centre are now considered “extreme far right”.
Thus, both Ukip and For Britain are labelled “extreme far right” and anyone who is in or supports those parties are likewise considered “extreme far right ” and “fascists”. Thus, stigmatising large swaths of the population, who have never committed a crime and never wished ill of anyone. Not to mention stopping any form of open, truthful deabate

Myself, I would never vote for either Ukip or For Britain (I aim in a different direction) BUT I fail to see how both of them are “extreme far right”.
If they are it means the definition has changed, to something, which is, although not the best ideology, not THAT bad and quite understandable – it’s hard for some American’s to grasp, as the white skins there are visitors on a land that birthed coloured skin- it belonged to the native Americans. The South West is Mexican really. Whereas in the UK/Ireland the soil grew whites. Thus, it is a “white land” in that sense ( I’m talking for the last 1000 year and so on)
With that said, its human nature, especially on tiny Island for people to become “protectionist” . If you go to lots of “coloured” countries they are also “protectionist”.

To most people the “extreme far right” means Hitler loving, pure white skin worshipping, gay , black and jew hating killer monsters – the KKK in the USA , The Nazi party in Germany and in the UK the likes of the National Front and so on.
It sticks me as dishonest, at best, to stretch such an incendiary term to include parties like Ukip and For Britain.

Ukip are now merely right of centre, they only had one policy “leave the EU” and that “want” is a mainstream “want”, that was also favoured by Tony Benn, labour, and Jeremy Corbyn, labour, (for different reasons), not to mention 52% of the country.
They also had ITV television presenter Kilroy Silk and film/television star Joan Collins among their membership- these two are hardly Heinrich Himmler

For Britain are a party paid for by the “right wing” of Israel. they are a party that deals in “slight of hand”
BUT their manifesto is not extreme far right”- it espouses animal rights, tighter controls on immigration (much like the Conservative parties) and a crackdown on Sharia Law practises in the UK ( one law for all) .
Their leader, Anne Marie Warters, is a lesbian, animal rights lover, from Dublin who used to be in the Labour party. She is not an”extreme far right ” activist.

I am aware there are people with unfortunate idea’s in both Ukip and For Britain BUT there are in Labour and Conservative parties also- that’s what political parties are though. They are parties that are made of individuals with different ideas that come together for a general goal. I do maintain the general goal of both Ukip and For Britain, in terms of their party manifesto isn’t “extreme far right”.

To lump the likes of Kiljoy Silk, Joan Collins and Anne Marie Waters ( a gay, animal loving woman from Dublin ) in with Hitler and David Duke helps nobody…

Racism In Reverse

It was a rainy day, in the desert town, so I sat down and watched a documentary about Elvis (my first fave and still one of my top fave’s all these slated years later) it was an enjoyable watch, alas I have forgotten the name of it and I can’t be bothered to google it- lazy I know, sue me sister.

During the documentary some decided to take Elvis to task for “Cultural appropriation” (oh, momma throw me a yawn, thankyouverymuch). This was regarding the hoary old criticism that Elvis stole from black music…Blah de BORING blah..
Well, this charge is true and its false…He did cover black artists BUT he also covered lots of white blue grass and county artists, furthermore lots of blues music actually has its roots in old country and Celtic folk songs …

Really, “cultural appropriation” (as its defined today) is a form of reversed racism, as its only really used, as an insult, against white people .

If you said “Oh no, a black person can’t study Wilde, Shakespeare or The Greek Philosophers, its taking from the white culture ” or “a black person can’t study classical music that’s white music” people would (rightly) have a fit, yet that is cultural appropriation…

In short (for the dim out there) culture at its very essence is cultural appropriation.

Yes, Elvis did take from black culture BUT then Prince stole wholesale from white artists, especially Bowie and new wave artists (whatever they are )

All that said , the truth is, lots of things Elvis and Bowie (and Prince) get praised for starting .. Little Richard did first

Speaking of racism and accused racism , all this Liam Neessan carry on , says more about the “click bait”, fake “outrage” of our times than it does about actual racism
In fact it seemed to me, to some the part about Liam thinking something ‘racist’, 30 years ago, was worse than a man raping a woman.. At least that’s what I was getting from the comments I’d read.
which can only make a logical being think “What a pathetic little culture we live in.”

Liam said his thoughts (30 years ago ) were wrong.. And guess what if someone you love is raped you may not think too clearly.. You may say and do something which may cause a stir in a library in Surrey..

Treating Liam Neeson like some hard to the core racist and placing him next to the Richard Spencers of this world does nobody any favours, in fact it helps real racists as they can hid among the muddle .

These are dim wit times, where fake outrage takes the place of considered opinion and where people use another’s momentary lack of virtue (imagined or otherwise) as an excuse for malice and pittyless attention seeking spite.

Life as it’s lived and sold today is fake. Films, music and books remain the real reality
